Learn about the The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH) including visiting hours and guidelines, clinical services and contact information.

The ICU delivers care to patients with life-threatening injuries and illnesses.

The unit has 14 beds and an outdoor space for patients, families and carers.

Patients may require admission to the ICU for any number of reasons, including close monitoring and treatment following:

  • presentation to the Emergency Department
  • complex surgery, planned or emergency
  • deterioration in hospital and requiring a high level of care or intervention.

Visiting the ICU

The ICU is located on level 1 of the Kangkanthi building and is a secure access clinical area.

Visitors need to ring the intercom at the front door to the ICU, which will be answered by an ICU staff member.

Once inside the unit, all visitors need to present to the ICU front desk before being directed to the patient bedside.

The ICU waiting room is a comfortable space to wait until clinical staff can update you or bring you to the patient bedside.

Note: flowers and plants are not permitted in the ICU.

Visiting hours

ICU visiting hours are daily between 11:00 am and 3:30 pm.

We request that visitors do not attend the unit during quiet time which is between 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm, for the benefit of both patients and staff.

If you need to visit outside of the hours indicated, please call and arrange an alternative time with ICU nursing staff via the switchboard.

Up to two visitors are allowed at the bed space at any one time, to avoid overcrowding of busy clinical areas.

We appreciate your understanding and that our visiting requirements may change, at short notice, under certain circumstances.

The ICU's technical capabilities include:
